Managing Your Migration to Cloud

Cloud is one of the buzzwords of our current age. Data is king and businesses are increasingly getting involved, but remember to look before you leap

Earlier this year Rackspace Hosting, a regular partner of Open Plus, commented on some of the issues and protocol involved in a business's migration to Cloud technology. The advice, which originated from a report published by globally recognised research firm Gartner, has by no means gone out of date.

In fact we feel that it has only become more relevant as the three months since then have passed, so much so that we thought we'd remind our readers about the article, which you can find here.

Mission Critical Data

It's extremely important to be well informed as to what assurances a potential Cloud service provider offers your business with regard to the invaluable, mission-critical data you're migrating. This is an area in which Open Plus has expertise and experience; we've helped online retailers do it, adding an extra layer of assurance in this critical transition.

But does your IT manager have the in-depth legal understanding, and indeed the spare time, to regularly go through the vendor's contract with a fine-tooth comb, ensuring absolutely that risk is continuously evaluated?

On the topic, Open Plus CEO Andrew Sykes has this to say:

“It's important to understand just how much of the "crown jewels" you're dropping into a cloud environment and what is the bare minimum you can expect from that environment. It's very prudent to understand the limitations and build in contingency plans. When Open Plus undertakes a cloud migration project, we come from the point of view that while loss of data or service might be perfectly acceptable under the cloud provider's SLA, it's pretty unlikely our client would have the same attitude so we plan accordingly.”

So be sure of the basic tenets of your contract as Rackspace and Gartner advise and make sure you minimise the risks.

But if in doubt, do give us a call; we have the experience you need, and it costs you nothing to ask!
