UWI Technology identified a simple, everyday problem.

There's a jar of food in the fridge or the cupboard that has to be used with two weeks of opening. How long has it been open? You don't know so you throw it away and waste it. A worse case: it's off and it ruins your food. Worst of all: it cause you or someone else to become ill.

Most of us can identify with this problem and I imagine most of us probably choose the initial option, tossing the food you paid for in the bin.

According to UWI, £11bn a year is wasted on food being thrown away, which, they argue, amounts to £680 per household.

The UWI Label

The technology company's innovative solution to this common problem is the UWI label, a 'smart label' that not only detects when the jar is opened, but also tracks and records the passage of time and tells the consumer when the food within is no longer edible.

With a simple green and red system for indicating this, the UWI label is designed to minimise food waste and health risks in one innovative solution.

And while the origin and main focus of the product is food, UWI Technology has also identified several other potential target markets, such as veterinary products, cosmetics, and glues and sealants.

Take One Small Step

Sponsored by Barclays, the Take One Small Step competition is a major opportunity for UWI. They've been short-listed as a Scottish Region Finalist, there are only three companies that have come as far, and the prize is £50K.

This money, no doubt, would do the product enormous benefit and has the potential to effect food hygiene everywhere.

Have a look at the video below and make up your own mind. If, like us, you're impressed with the product and think it has enormous potential, then visit www.takeonesmallstep.co.uk for more details and voting options, or vote for UWI by simply texting UWI TECH to 62555.

The judges have done their job and now only the public vote stands between this great product and the money. It doesn't matter where you are, you have until 27th June to make a difference and help with the launch of the UWI Label.
