2011 could well be the big year for open source, with some excellent results in for 2010 followed by this recognition for a leading industry product. Described by the competition judges as the 'Swiss army knife of the 21st century,' Apache Hadoop is an open source software project which helps organisations to process large amounts of data.
The project beat such heavyweights as Wikileaks and iPad to the top prize for its potential game-changing influence on media innovation, which, according to project founder Doug Cutting, enables enterprises “to make sense of their increasingly large and diverse collections of data.”
Prominant users of the sofeware include Facebook, Twitter, Adobe, EBay, LastFM and Yahoo.
Other Winners
In the technology innovation categories, notable winners included Shutl, an e-retail service which allows customers to utilise a network of local couriers to specify delivery times to within a one-hour window, and E Ink, the Electronic Paper Display (EPD) technology which is the backbone of e-readers like Amazon's Kindle, was awarded the prize for Disruptive Technology.
Another winner at the event was the iHobo project, which picked up the Public Sector award and the On a Budget award. The downloadable mobile app is styled as the world's first 'homeless tamagotchi', and functions as an interactive game which encourages the user to donate to homelessness charities.
